JOHN KING
My paintings are essentially silent statements that should not require any explanation or narrative. I admit however that to some extent my paintings have to do with allusions and feelings that I incorporate unconsciously. My brushstrokes often allude to an influence that has intrigued me for years: the art of East Asian calligraphy. Just as frequently a brushstroke can express a feeling, emotion or character trait. The fluidity of a brushstroke can reinforce the rigidity of a nearby rectangle, which in turn can make the brushstroke feel more unpredictable. The process of painting allows me to explore the behavior of the basic visual elements -- line, shape, colour, texture and value – and how they interact. I am most interested by compositions where the interplay between lines and shapes is given centre stage
