ADRIAN LIVESLEY
ARTIST STATEMENT
I want to make a painting come alive by working abstractly as well as from life. I see my urban landscapes as quiet dramas: the objects, the colour and the spaces between objects providing the dialogue. My paintings are models; they express what I cannot put into words—the healthful, restorative rhythms and forces I see in nature. If art is a form of rebellion, as Abert Camus believed, then I am rejecting a world of chaos and aggression in favour of one embracing order, lyricism and vibrancy.
The paintings' structures are taken from drawings completed in situ. The working process determines and shapes the final outcome, rather than any need to be true to specific forms or colours that may have been in the original subject.
