LEYA EVELYN
Born in Washington, D.C. and educated at both Brown and Yale Universities in the United States, Leya Evelyn moved to Nova Scotia in the early 1980’s after having lived and worked for some time in New York City. Though widely considered to be an abstract (or nonrepresentational) artist, she now works in an artistic environment – that of maritime Canada – not well-known for such art.
Evelyn’s self-admitted intention of “making statements” with her work has given us paintings and silkscreen prints that are meaningful well beyond any attempt on our part to pigeonhole them as simply abstract works of art. And yet looking at one of her works we are confronted by an artwork that is, to all immediate appearances, just that: abstract.
