NANCY DAY
Nancy Day was born and raised in the prairie city of Edmonton, where winters are often long and harsh. Spring’s promise of new life and summer’s fulfillment has always held a fascination and joy for Nancy. As a young girl, she began painting the subjects that expressed the marvelous phenomenon of growth and nature’s capacity for rejuvenation. Through an almost spiritual immersion in her environment, Nancy continues to express her respect and fascination with the proliferation of nature. Today, she explores this theme through patterns and shapes of colour, intermingled with line and gestural qualities. Her verdant landscapes, which often reflect the rich foliage of her adopted west coast home, and her exuberant free-flowing florals, burst with energy of nature freed.
Nancy has enhanced a natural talent and an enduring interest with extensive formal training; she has attended a variety of art classes given by such facilities as the Edmonton, Art Gallery and the Department of Extension at the University of Alberta. In 1985, she attended the inaugural year at the Lester B. Pearson International Summer School of the Arts on the west coast. Nancy’s formal training has culminated in a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree which she received from the University of Alberta in the spring of 1987 after four years of full-time study. Like her subject matter, Nancy continues to grow and explore within her medium and plans to attend further classes. Nancy now lives on Gabriola Island in BC and works full-time as an artist.
